Fencing Requirements

Updated on Feb 15, 2026

Understanding the Requirement

New Zealand legislation requires any body of water with sides less than 76cm from the ground to be surrounded by a 1.2-metre fence. For MSpa portable spa pools — which come equipped with childproof locks and covers — compliance can be achieved by placing your spa on a platform that elevates the sides to meet the 76cm threshold.

Elevation Required by Model

Each MSpa model requires a different amount of elevation to reach the 76cm compliance height:

  • Mono & Oslo (65cm sides) — 11cm elevation needed
  • Tekapo (68cm sides) — 8cm elevation needed
  • Bergen (70cm sides) — 6cm elevation needed

Practical Solutions

Many Kiwi spa owners achieve compliance using simple, cost-effective methods. Our heat preservation mats and ground sheets provide elevation while also improving insulation and reducing running costs — a practical two-in-one solution.

Polystyrene or foam rubber sheets are another popular option and can be easily trimmed to shape using a craft knife to match the footprint of your spa. Some owners have also built simple plywood platforms to reach the required 76cm side height.
