Who Would Have Thought?! Snails Breeding in Your Spa Unit!

Who would have thought portable spas could harbour some truly surprising challenges? Welcome back to the "Who Would Have Thought?!" series by Portable Spas New Zealand, where we explore the unexpected quirks of spa ownership and how to keep your relaxation sanctuaries in top condition. In our previous article, we uncovered how rodents can wreak havoc on spa units. Now, we’re tackling an even more peculiar problem: snails breeding inside your MSpa! Let’s dive into how this can happen and, more importantly, how to prevent it.

Why Snails Are Attracted to Portable Spa Units

Snails in your spa unit? It might sound bizarre, but it’s a problem some MSpa owners in New Zealand have encountered. While it’s not something you typically think of when planning to enjoy your spa, there’s a reason behind it. The warm and moist environment inside your spa's control unit creates an ideal habitat for these small invaders. Combined with access to crevices and residual water droplets, the conditions can unwittingly become a breeding ground for snails.

How Snails Damage Your Spa

Once inside the control unit, snails can cause frustrating complications:

  • Blocked Systems: Slimy trails and debris can clog water lines and disrupt performance.
  • Electrical Risks: Snails interacting with electrical components can short-circuit your spa unit, resulting in costly repairs.
  • Hygiene Concerns: Breeding snails can lead to bacterial contamination, compromising water quality.

Unfortunately, damage caused by snails is not usually covered under warranty, making prevention an absolute must for spa owners.

Preventing Snail Infestations

The good news? You can easily stop snails from setting up shop in your spa unit with proper maintenance and storage practices. Follow these tips to keep your MSpa in top shape:

1. Store Your Spa Properly
  • Drain and Dry Thoroughly: Before storing your MSpa, completely drain the water. Wipe down the liner and components, ensuring no moisture is left behind. Residual water can attract pests, including snails.
  • Use Pest-Resistant Covers: Ensure your spa cover is well-fitted and sealed to prevent snails and other pests from sneaking in. Consider using a secondary insulation bladder to further protect the spa.

2. Maintain Your MSpa Routinely

Regular maintenance is crucial for preventing snail infestations:

  • Clean Inlet and Outlet Valves: Weekly cleaning helps remove debris that might encourage pests. Use a garden hose to flush out any residue. If necessary, consider removing the filter grills for deeper cleaning when the water level is below the grills.
  • Inspect Control Units: During cleaning, ensure there are no signs of pests or snail activity, such as slimy trails or snail shells.
  • Replace Filters on Time: Dirty or degraded filters can create an environment conducive to pests. Replace filters every 4–6 weeks and clean them weekly using a garden hose.
3. Snail-Proof Your Spa Area
  • Clear Surroundings: Remove debris, leaves, and other potential hiding spots for snails near your spa area.
  • Set Up Natural Deterrents: Use pest-safe deterrents, such as copper tape around the spa area, or natural repellents like coffee grounds and crushed eggshells.
  • Routine Checks: Regularly inspect your spa for early signs of snail activity, such as shells or trails near the control unit.

What to Do If You Spot Snails

If you discover snails have already invaded your spa unit, it’s important to act fast:

  1. Disconnect the spa from the power supply to avoid electrical hazards.
  2. Carefully clean the control unit and valves, removing debris, slime, and any snails or eggs.
  3. Flush water pipes thoroughly, ensuring no obstructions remain.
  4. Inspect for further damages. If you suspect the snails have caused electrical issues, contact our technical team at service@portablespas.co.nz for advice.

Following these steps can save your spa from extensive damage and keep it ready for relaxation!

Why Prevention is Essential

Investing time in preventative care ensures that your spa remains a safe and enjoyable retreat year-round. Snail infestations, while rare, can lead to expensive repairs and potential health risks if left unaddressed. By maintaining your spa and storing it properly, you’re not just protecting your investment—you’re safeguarding endless relaxation opportunities. Remember, proactive care is always cheaper than reactive repairs.
