If you're an MSpa owner or considering purchasing a portable spa, we have an important water care update to share with you. After years of experience supporting thousands of MSpa owners across New Zealand, we're updating our sanitiser recommendations.
Going forward, Portable Spas New Zealand strongly recommends bromine as your primary sanitiser choice for MSpa products, rather than chlorine.
What's Changed?
For years, chlorine has been the default sanitiser recommendation for spas—it's widely available, affordable, and familiar to most people. However, our extensive hands-on experience with MSpa products has shown us that bromine offers significant advantages that make your spa ownership experience simpler and more enjoyable.
This isn't about chlorine being "bad"—it's about bromine being genuinely better suited to MSpa portable spas.
The Real Problem with Chlorine in Spas
Here's what we've learned from working with MSpa owners: chlorine raises your water's pH level. That might not sound like a big deal, but it creates a domino effect of issues.
When pH rises, you need to add pH Decrease to bring it back down. If you don't stay on top of this constant balancing act, the elevated pH can lead to limescale buildup and potential equipment damage. It's an ongoing cycle that requires vigilance and regular chemical adjustments.
We've seen too many MSpa owners frustrated by this constant pH juggling act. There's a better way.
Why Bromine Makes Spa Ownership Easier
Bromine offers several practical advantages that directly address the challenges chlorine creates:
1. More Stable Water Chemistry
Unlike chlorine, bromine doesn't significantly raise your pH levels. This means less time spent testing and adjusting your water chemistry, and fewer chemicals needed to maintain balance. Your water care routine becomes genuinely simpler.
2. Better Equipment Protection
By maintaining more stable pH levels, bromine helps protect your MSpa equipment from limescale buildup and the damage that pH imbalances can cause. This translates to longer equipment life and fewer headaches.
3. More Comfortable for Your Skin and Eyes
Bromine is significantly gentler than chlorine. You'll notice less skin irritation, less eye discomfort, and far less of that harsh chemical smell. Your spa sessions become more pleasant and relaxing.
4. Works Better at Spa Temperatures
Here's something important: bromine remains highly effective at the 36-40°C temperatures you use your spa at. Chlorine actually becomes less stable as water temperature increases, which means it's fighting an uphill battle in your hot spa water. Bromine excels in exactly these conditions.
5. Protects Your Spa Liner
For Bergen and Tekapo MSpa models specifically, the manufacturer has identified that bromine helps prevent the liner fading that can occur with chlorine use. This keeps your spa looking better for longer.
