Choosing the Right Sanitiser for Your Portable Spa

Choosing the Right Sanitiser for Your Portable Spa

When it comes to keeping your spa water clean and safe, you have two excellent options: chlorine and bromine. Both are effective sanitisers, and the choice often comes down to your personal preferences and priorities.

Important Note for MSpa Owners

All MSpas from Portable Spas New Zealand can be used with either chlorine or bromine. However, we particularly recommend bromine for the Bergen and Tekapo MSpa models, as chlorine has been shown to cause bleaching of the metallic blue liner in these specific models.

Bromine: The Gentle Choice

Why choose bromine:

  • Heat stable - maintains effectiveness in your spa's hot water
  • Skin-friendly - gentler on skin and eyes, perfect for longer, more relaxing soaks
  • Minimal odour - produces a subtle, less noticeable smell
  • Long-lasting protection - continues sanitising for extended periods

Things to consider:

  • Higher cost compared to chlorine
  • Requires higher concentrations and works more slowly
  • May lower water pH levels
  • Breaks down faster in direct sunlight (less ideal for uncovered outdoor spas)

Chlorine: The Powerful Option

Why choose chlorine:

  • Highly effective - powerful sanitiser that quickly eliminates bacteria and microorganisms
  • Budget-friendly - the most cost-effective sanitising option
  • Readily available - easy to find and purchase

Things to consider:

  • Less stable in hot water conditions
  • Can cause skin and eye irritation, particularly at higher concentrations
  • Produces a stronger, more noticeable chemical smell
  • May raise water pH levels

Making Your Decision

Choose bromine if:

  • You have sensitive skin or eyes
  • You enjoy longer spa sessions
  • You prefer minimal chemical odours
  • Budget is less of a concern

Choose chlorine if:

  • Cost-effectiveness is your priority
  • You don't mind more frequent chemical applications
  • You're comfortable with potential mild irritation

Special considerations:

  • Outdoor spa placement: If your spa receives direct sunlight, chlorine may be more suitable as bromine degrades faster under UV exposure
